What captivates us and truly captures us survives throughout the ages; for example the beauty in a sculpture by Michelangelo or any historical architecture in Rome; from the churches to an original brick wall that has been carved out and now is the backdrop of a local coffee house. The history and charm vaporize into one magical scene.
Yet this does not diminish the importance of daily beauty in our lives as it feeds our souls, stirs passions and makes one feel truly indulgent. A vase of fresh flowers, a long hot bath surrounded by tea lights with a glass of wine, the stars on a black night in the country side. A red breasted robin feeding her babies. Dew droplets on the grass. The smell of ocean air and the crashing of the waves on the shore. All these things are beautiful and untainted by our artificial concept of cash. They are undeniable rights of the masses.
Beauty brings joy. It creates an overwhelming feeling of awe, wonder and happiness… of privilege.
I imagine being able to pull together spreads of things I love from my house and style them as layouts to become Instagram photos seen by the world, for nothing more than to catalogue collections I find beautiful, to look at on harder days as a sort of highlight reel of all I am grateful for in my life. Trinkets from travels, jewelry, scarves, coffee mugs and make up. I imagine it all, a cohesive joy board.
I love to take photos, yet I have not given myself that gift of creating lately or much at all. This life is so sort, so fleeting. Maybe that is why we document it. Maybe that is why I do not start, because soon I, and you, will all be dead and then who cares?! The beholder of beauty cares, that is who. Beauty lasts. It is constantly recreating itself, energy transforms into something new for us. A shell. A flower. A cat.
I must have access to books, to both read and to write. There is beauty in lettering; calligraphy is beauty in writing that is literally historic. How lucky we are to continue this art form.
